At Aalberts advanced mechatronics, we are evolving by reorganizing ourselves around value streams rather than functions. In this organizational model, cross-functional teams work together from the moment a customer requests a product until the moment they receive it. This approach is helping us improve coordination between departments, keep up with growth in our industry, and better serve our customers.

We will explain you a bit about what each value stream is all about and how our employees are experiencing this innovative new way of working. Here we speak with Dennis van der Zwaag, value stream manager at Pneutec, about working within the value stream Machine Conditioning, Hose Bundles, & Assemblies.

What does the Machine Conditioning, Hose Bundles, & Assemblies value stream do?

We build hose bundles for the machines ASML uses to make chips. These are flexible tubes on which we add couplings and other connectors so these can be mounted in the machines.

What makes the value stream special?

If you are new to our business, you could get the impression that the products we make are not very complex. But the bundles we make are tested to meet all of ASML’s special requirements and can be mounted directly on their machines. We are able to not only assemble but also test the tubes, which creates high value for ASML. Meeting their very specific qualifications, making products of the highest quality, and having a unique proposition in ASML’s supply chain makes our value stream unique.

What are recent challenges within the value stream?

Like all suppliers in the semicon industry, our challenge is to adjust our capacity to the highly fluctuating demand of our customer. In recent years, the growth was so big that we had to open a second production location in Vessem. Our challenge this year is to balance our workload between Hoofddorp and Vessem but with a smaller demand than we had last year. Also, transferring products to Vessem needs to be done securely to maintain the quality of our products.

Can you share a success story where this value stream has made a difference for a customer?

Our success lies in the fact that we are capable of making these products, always with the highest quality, and testing each product against ASML’s very specific qualifications for a very large number of products. When a new bundle is introduced, we can get this done in a very short time frame.

What are the upcoming plans for the value stream?

Our new location in Vessem opened in 2024.  In the near future, we will start further developing and growing this facility. The first step will be moving our complete warehouse to Vessem.
