At Aalberts advanced mechatronics, we are evolving by reorganizing ourselves around value streams rather than functions. In this organizational model, cross-functional teams work together from the moment a customer requests a product until the moment they receive it. This approach is helping us improve coordination between departments, keep up with growth in our industry, and better serve our customers.

We will explain you a bit about what each value stream is all about and how our employees are experiencing this innovative new way of working. We speak with Alfred Wittendorp, value stream manager at Mogema, about working within the value stream High Precision Assemblies (HPA).

What does the High Precision Assemblies value stream do?

This value stream makes High Precision Assemblies. A portion of the parts are produced in our welding shop and midsize machining and the remaining parts are purchased. The parts are then assembled in a Grade 4 cleanroom (or in a clean assembly room) into a (sub)assembly for our customers.

What makes the value stream special?

What makes HPA special is the variety of products. It ranges from very small parts that have only a small assembly step to complex assemblies. Other value streams (within Mogema) are driven more by move rates. Also, the variety in our portfolio makes it very diverse and challenging at the same time.

What are recent challenges within the value stream?

Our portfolio contains many products which were already developed years ago. Since then, machines, techniques, and people have changed, but we still have to deliver the same parts with the same quality, which can sometimes be a challenge.

Can you share a success story where this value stream has made a difference for a customer?

Because the organization is now set up with value streams, there is more room to pay attention to the HPA products. Also, by looking in a practical way at possible alternative solutions for damaged or missing parts, we have been able to prevent downtime for our customers.

What are the upcoming plans for the value stream?

Doing more of what we do best; machining complex parts that we then assemble ourselves; and transforming into a modern machine factory where products are made and assembled with the best quality.
