At Aalberts advanced mechatronics, we are evolving by reorganizing ourselves around value streams rather than functions. In this organizational model, cross-functional teams work together from the moment a customer requests a product until the moment they receive it. This approach is helping us improve coordination between departments, keep up with growth in our industry, and better serve our customers.

We will explain you a bit about what each value stream is all about and how our employees are experiencing this innovative new way of working. We speak with Thei Minten, value stream manager at Lamers, about working within the value stream Lay-out & Parts.

What does the Lay-out & Parts value stream do?

Our value stream produces ultra-high purity tube assemblies. These tube assemblies are either supplied to the value stream Modules & Cabinets, where they are assembled in the modules, or delivered directly to our end customers. In our cleanroom we carry out processes including laser coding, shortening, and bending of tubes, followed by welding, leak testing, and qualification.

What makes the value stream special?

We have a relatively small team so far. This allows us to quickly step beyond our own work area and operate outside our own framework.

What are biggest challenges and opportunities within the value stream?

Our challenge for the coming period is to clarify our objectives and consultation structure. In addition, step by step we will get additional disciplines within Lamers to join our value stream and make it complete.

Can you share a success story where this value stream has made a difference for a customer?

As the result of an internal misinterpretation, we had to initiate a large rework process for a customer. Because everyone in the value stream felt responsible for this, that process was quickly set in motion and coordinated by the value stream team. Thanks to colleagues inside and outside the value stream, in the end the customer got their products delivered in the right way and on time.

What are the upcoming plans for the value stream?

·        A keyword within production is multifunctionality in order to be prepared to scale up in the future. Training will be an important part of this.  ·        Research is being done to simplify quality control by scanning products for critical dimensions.
