At Aalberts advanced mechatronics, we are evolving by reorganizing ourselves around value streams rather than functions. In this organizational model, cross-functional teams work together from the moment a customer requests a product until the moment they receive it. This approach is helping us improve coordination between departments, keep up with growth in our industry, and better serve our customers.

We will  explain you a bit about what each value stream is all about and how our employees are experiencing this innovative new way of working. Here we speak with Jurjen Schenkel, value stream manager at Mogema, about working within the value stream Large Frame Steel (LFS).

What does the Large Frames Steel value stream do?

As a single source, we make the basic frame for all of our customer's DeepUV machines. In addition to this steel frame, which is the size of a passenger car, we make steel products that are used for this same type of machine.

What makes the value stream special?

This value stream is fully equipped for our customer's products. We can do almost all the processes in-house and have all the knowledge and expertise needed for this type of system. We have to work very precisely and deliver the frames as clean and prepared as possible so the customer can start as soon as the frame rolls into their cleanroom.

What are recent challenges within the value stream?

We were recently faced with a quality issue with one of our products. By working together with our customer and paying a lot of attention to solving the problem in a structured and focused way, great strides were made in terms of product and process quality.

Can you share a success story where this value stream has made a difference for a customer?

One of the challenges was accurately estimating the required production volume in a fast-changing market environment. Thanks to our cross-functional collaboration within the value stream, we were able to quickly assess customer needs, align engineering with production capabilities, and scale up efficiently. As a result, we delivered the Xt 260 baseframes not only within the tight lead time but also with zero quality escapes, strengthening our position as a reliable partner and helping our customer maintain their own delivery commitments. This project really highlighted the strength of our value stream approach: fast decision-making, end-to-end ownership, and close alignment with customer demand.

What are the upcoming plans for the value stream?

We are always looking for the latest innovations in manufacturing technology. For example, we are currently exploring applications of AI in quality inspection methods. In addition, we are always looking for opportunities to achieve even more vertical integration of the supply chain; this strengthens our competitive position as a 'one stop shop', improves the speed and agility of our organization, and helps us keep up with a volatile market and volatile customer demand.
